It is steadfastly and overtly against the current Australian government’s policies on asylum seekers, particularly in relation to children. I am not even half way, and already many exciting and interesting things have occurred. Menzies is a ‘refugee sympathiser’, as one teacher sneeringly calls him, and he and Jamal (whose family’s adventures in escaping the Taliban and seeking asylum in Australia we followed in Boy Overboard) are pen pals. After a tough decision, Bridget decides to set off with Menzies on a dangerous journey to rescue Jamal and Bibi. It was a question I wanted to explore, and it’s a question I’ve continued to explore since in Once and the other Felix books.
